1. Do I have to create an account to be able to search smart411?
No. When you first visit smart411, you are logged in as a Guest User. As a Guest, you have all the power to search as someone who has a registered account. People with accounts have some added benefits to make it even easier and faster to search smart411. When you have an account, you can have as many locations saved on your account as you want. With an account, you can add and make changes to your locations as well as change the Default location. Registered users can also see and click on their most recent searches in the "Recent Searches" box.


2. How does smart411 know where to search?

The search engine used by smart411 can tell the difference between a company name, a category and a phone number. All you have to do is enter some information about the company for which you are looking into the "Search" box. If you have very little information, you can start with a broad search and narrow it down enough to find the exact company for which you're looking. (You can even use parts of a company name, i.e. "bur" instead of "Burger King")


3. How do I know where I'm searching?
In the black Information Bar underneath the smart411 logo, you will see some bold white text that will help you proceed to your next step. Once you have chosen a location for your search, the location you are searching will show up in the black information bar.

You will also find different information pertaining to other parts of the site in the Information Bar, depending on what page you're on. So as you browse through smart411, frequently check the Information Bar to get an idea of what is happening!


4. I entered a city and state for my first search, and now it's the only location I can search from. How can I change my location?

On the top left of the home page, just to the left of the yellow "Search" box, you will find a text link to help you with your locations.

If you're a guest user and don't yet have an account, you can look to the right of the "Search" box on the home page and see a text link saying "New Search Location". Click on this link, and you will be taken to a page that allows you to enter a city and state that will become your new search location. Your most recent search location is what will show when you come back to smart411.

If you have an account on smart411, look just to the right of the "Search" box on eht home page and you will see a text link reading "Location Manager". Click on "Location Manager" to add new locations, change existing locations and change which location is your default (your default location is always on the top of your location selector pull-down menu).


5. Is my default location the only one I can have when I come back to smart411?

Guest users can only have one location at a time. You can change the location of your search at any time by clicking on the "New Search Location" text link at the top of the home page just to the right of the "Search" box.

Once you sign up for an account with smart411, you can have as many locations as you wish saved in your account. After you've entered your locations, whenever you come back to smart411 and log in to your account, all your locations will be immediately available to you in the location selector pull-down menu.


6. Do I have to do a category search from the "Categories" section on the home page?
You can perform a category search from any "Search" box on smart411. The smart411 home page contains several common broad categories for you to click on to help you in your searches. These do not replace your ability to enter a category search into a "Search" box. You can search on any category word you can think of, even if it's more specific that what is listed in the "Categories" section.


7. I searched for the exact name of the business and got no results. Am I doing something wrong?
Make sure you didn't spell a part of the name of the company incorrectly.

The company for which you are searching may not be listed exactly the way you typed it. Enter just a portion of the name of the company instead, such as "24 hour" instead of "24 hour fitness".


8. Why should I create an account?
There are certain features available to users who have a registered account that will not be available to guest users.

With a registered account, you can save as many locations as you wish in the location selector pull-down menu to change your location quickly at any time. You can add and delete locations, and change your default location quickly and easily. Soon, you will even be able to inspect the details of your smart411 listing, view your ad and submit change requests directly from our site!

There are many more features to be introduced in the near future, many of which will only be accessible by those who have a registered account. If you find yourself using smart411 on a regular basis for all your yellow page searches, you will want to consider registering for an account. When you do, you will have access to all of smart411's time-saving features!


9. How do I create an account?
Simply click on the button in your "Welcome, Guest" window that reads "Join Now!". You will be taken to a form where you enter some basic information.

Once you've entered all your basic information, click on the "Next" button to go to a form where you can create your first search location.

Enter any information you may have about your new location into the new location form, then click on the "Create Another" button to create another search location. Once you have created all the search locations you want, go ahead and click on the "Done" button at the bottom to return to the home page.

That's it! You now have access to all of the time-saving features of smart411. Start searching and enjoy!


10. What do I do with the "Recent Search" section?

See where you've been and go back to a former search!

The "Recent Search" section located at the bottom left of the home page shows your five most recent searches and allows you to click on any of them to automatically get the results for that search again. When you come back to smart411 and sign in on your account, you will see your five former searches, no matter how much time has passed.

You must be a registered user to be able to access this feature.


11. Why should I enter more than one location for my account? I can just search other cities through "Advanced Search".
Most people find that they search for businesses in only a few areas on a regular basis. Instead of entering a different location every time you want to switch, smart411 makes it possible to quickly and easily switch between your most commonly searched locations.

Once you've entered your locations in the "Location Manager", all you need do is go to the location selector drop-down menu (at the left side of the home page, or to the right of the "Search" box on the results page) and click on the location you would like to search.

You can even change the results of a search on the fly! Didn't find what you were looking for in a particular city? Just click on the location selector drop-down menu to the right of the "Search" box on the results page, and select on a different location. Smart411 will automatically change your search to show the results of your last search in the newly-selected location! There's no need to go back to the home page and change locations and enter the same search.

This is just one way smart411 saves you time and energy when you need to find a business quickly.


12. How do I change or upgrade my listing on smart411?
At this time, you must call one of our representatives at 800-400-7574 if you wish to make a change to your listing or upgrade your listing so that it appears more often in our "Featured Advertisers" section.

In the future, we will give our advertisers the power to make change requests and upgrades directly from the smart411 web site! Keep an eye out for this powerful feature.


13. How do I make my company show up on the home page?
If you wish your company to show up in our "Featured Advertisers" section, we can upgrade your listing to a paid listing and your company will begin rotating into our home page "Featured Advertisers" section. In addition, you will automatically have the option to have a paid listing in our printed business-to-business directory..

If you would like to make your listing appear in the "Featured Advertisers" section on our home page and a listing in our business-to-business yellow pages, please call one of our representatives at 800-400-7574.

In the future, we will make it possible for you to request these changes directly from smart411!


14. Can I make my company show up more often on the home page?
Yes. The paid listings that show up in the "Featured Advertisers" section are chosen randomly, and only businesses within the same city of the location chosen by smart411 users show in the section. You can upgrade your account and make it so your ad shows up more often and at a higher position on the table.
